Types of Parasites in Dog

Parasites in dogs have two categories that every canine lover should be aware of: Internal Parasites and External Parasites!

Parasites which are in the form of worms and can easily be transferred in various ways living inside the body are Internal Parasites.

The most commonly observed parasites like Flea & Ticks and rarely Ear and Mange Mites which can land up or crawl up and feeds on the dog’s blood are External Parasites.

Internal Parasites:

· Heartworms

· Roundworms

· Hookworms

· Tapeworms

· Ringworms

· Whipworms

External Parasites:

· Flea

· Ticks

· Mites

· Lice

Internal Parasites:

The most common types of intestinal parasites in dogs are roundworms and hookworms, intestinal parasites are usually ingested by dogs and affect a dog’s gastrointestinal tract.

These internal parasites can cause a serious health condition, and pet parents should always be watchful and give on-time treatment. Parasitic infestation can lead to blindness, anemia and even possible sudden demise.

External Parasites:

The most common types of external parasite that affects dogs are Fleas & Ticks. Dogs can get fleas, while playing outside in open areas, bushes, tall grasses and in the dirt. Ticks attack the dogs when they come in contact with infected animals or places.

These external parasites are very irritating to dogs and affect their skin and can cause serious diseases like Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, and rocky-mountain fever. It can make your pet’s life miserable.

Symptoms Of Parasites

The existence of parasite infection in dogs depends on the types of parasite. Every pet parent should have annual preventions for fleas, ticks, and worms. An external deep inspection for fleas or ticks, especially after going outside is an easy way to detect parasites residing on your pet. Make an appointment with your local vet, if your pet shows the below symptoms:

  • Distended abdomen
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea, with or without blood or mucous
  • Loss of appetite
  • Decreased activity
  • Scooting
  • Worms or segments visible in the feces
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing

GI (gastrointestinal) parasites can detect by fecal testing in most cases, but not in all. Sometimes fecal test could not confirm the presence of parasites; therefore always use deworming according to the vet’s advice.
