Question from Nicola
Dog has been very badly malnurished and now the owner is wanting to assist it with recovering. It has increased in weight however she is scratching everywhere and has tiny little white bumps all over not sure what to give the dog or what I can recommend that I can bring in for my client
Our Vet Says:
Hi Nicola,
Thank you to the owner for helping this dog!  Due to his malnourishment his immune system would be weakened making him susceptible to picking up diseases and infections.  The white bumps on the skin may be due to a bacterial or fungal skin infection and can also be caused by mange. It would be best to take him to the vet for a full clinical work up, this will ensure he is not suffering from any other problems and the vet can correctly diagnose and treat the skin problem.
In the mean time I would suggest treating him with a product that targets mange and fleas, e.g Topical Advocate or Nexgard - chewable tablet.  You could also try Virbac’s Pyoderm shampoo, which is a medicated shampoo for bacterial and fungal infections. It must be left on the skin for 10 minutes before rinsing off.  If you use the topical advocate please wait 48-72 hours before washing the dog.
