Beat the Heat: 5 Homemade Frozen Treat Recipes for Dogs

Summer is here and as pet parents, it’s important to keep our furry friends cool and refreshed during the hot weather at South Africa. What better way to do that than with some healthy homemade treats? Here are five easy recipes of delicious and nutritious treats that your dog will love:

1. Frozen Watermelon Treats: 

Watermelon is a hydrating fruit that keeps your dog cool and refreshed during the hot weather. 

Ingredients:

  • 1 seedless watermelon 
  • Water

Instructions:

  • Cut the watermelon into small bite-sized pieces, add some water and make a smooth puree. 
  • Pour the puree into an ice cube tray or silicone mold and freeze it.
  • Once the treats are frozen, remove them from the freezer and give your dog a few pieces of the frozen watermelon treat to enjoy as a refreshing and healthy snack during hot summer days. 

2. Apple and Peanut Butter Treats:

Apples are a great source of fiber and vitamins for your dog, while peanut butter is a good source of protein. When both these elements are combined, it will make a healthy and tasty treat for your dog.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium-sized apple
  • 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter

Instructions:

  • Wash the apple and remove the core and seeds.
  • Cut the apple into thin slices or bite-sized pieces.
  • Spread a thin layer of peanut butter onto each apple slice.
  • Serve immediately as a refreshing and healthy treat for your dog.

3. Frozen Blueberry Treats:

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and are a great source of vitamins for your dog. This frozen treat is something your dog will love.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup of plain yogurt
  • Water

Instructions:

  • Make a smooth mixture of blueberries, yogurt and water.
  • Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray or silicone mold and freeze it.
  • Once the treats are frozen, pop the frozen blueberry treats out. Give your dog a few pieces to enjoy as a refreshing and healthy snack during hot weather.

4. Chicken and Zucchini Stew Treats:

The chicken stew treat can be a refreshing and tasty snack for dogs in the summer.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 chopped zucchinis
  • 2 chopped carrots
  • 4 cups of low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh parsley

Instructions:

  • Add all the ingredients to a large pot and bring it to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 20-25 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Add chicken pieces and vegetables to a food processor and make a smooth puree.
  • Scoop the pureed mixture into molds and freeze it.
  • Give it to your dog and watch them enjoy it.

5. Frozen Strawberry Banana Treats: 

This treat is not only delicious, but the ingredients are also rich in nutrients such as fiber, vitamin C, and potassium, which are great addition to any dog's diet.

 Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 cup of fresh strawberries
  • 1/2 cup of plain yogurt

Instructions:

  • Make a smooth puree of banana, strawberries, and yogurt in a blender.
  • Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds.
  • Freeze it until the mixture is completely frozen.
  • Serve your dog this yummy treat straight out of the freezer.

It's important to note that though these treats are healthy, they should still be given in moderation. Too many treats, even healthy ones, can lead to weight gain and other health problems.
