Popular Dog Breeds in South Africa

Many families have adopted dogs and they are the happiest ones as well! It is no surprise that even if there are widely varied breeds, from adorable toy breeds to large guard dogs, who will melt only in your arms; every household loves its furry member the same!
Dogs are among the best pets, they thrive on companionship as much as humans do. They love being adored by their human friends and always wait for cuddle time. Choosing is a tedious task for pet parents and to help you, we have made a list of some popular breeds in South Africa that you can consider bringing into your home.

#1. Basenji

Also known as the African Bark-less dog, this breed can yodel. They are energetic, inquisitive, and active hunting dogs; best for pet parents who can easily meet their energy levels and are open to taking on the challenge. Basenjis are small and graceful hounds that exhibit a fast trot. They are aloof with strangers but affectionate and alert breeds with families.

#2. Boerboel

This is a South African breed of large mastiff-type dog. They often pose as family guard dogs as they are valuable in tracking. They are protective, calm, composed, and loving towards children and families. This intelligent dog breed requires training to become manageable and well-mannered. Moreover, they will need daily exercise and daily mental stimulation; so adopt them only if you’re up for this challenge.

#3 Labrador retriever

Labradors have been one of the popular breeds that people adopt; and why not? They are friendly, outgoing, loyal, affectionate, and the ideal choice for families. They also socialize well with other animals and are enthusiastic and athletic. Labs’ versatility as search-and-rescue dogs, bomb-detection dogs, guide dogs, and epilepsy service dogs, is what makes them the ideal pets to have. If your house has children, you will have nothing to worry about; labs are very gentle and loving as well as protective of their humans.

#4 Rhodesian ridgeback

This superb hunter breed is strong-willed, patient, and extremely tolerant, making them excellent companions. They are independent-minded but at the same time very loving and gentle, so they are great for families with older children, but one must be careful having them around toddlers. If you enjoy physical activities, Rhodesians are the perfect companions for you, they will love to climb mountains and jog with you on the hiking trails. Usually, they are very sociable dogs, but one should be cautious about having many male dogs in a single household, as it can lead to a struggle for dominance.

#5 Golden retriever

Similar to their retriever cousins, Goldens are athletic, highly trainable breeds and family-friendly pets. They are again a great fit for families with children as they love to play and run around for hours; this is another reason why people prefer adopting them. They are also popular hunting companions, guide dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs, and like any other breed will need regular walks and mental stimulation. Moreover, they are highly adaptable to their surroundings so it will not be long before they start thinking of your house as their own.

#6 Rottweiler

Large and powerful, this breed of dog is just perfect to keep your home safe and also have a fun and playful mate. Contrary to popular belief Rottweiler is a breed of dog that is calm, confident, and courageous but not unreasonably aggressive. They are among the most intelligent breeds and are easy to train. Often they display an aloof demeanor to outsiders and their silliness makes them more desirable to their loved ones. Additionally, they are extremely protective of their friends and family; always making sure that you are warned about strangers.

#7 Bulldog

Bulldogs can be pure sweethearts but can also be stubborn when they choose to be! They are docile, loyal, friendly, and dignified breeds that will easily make friends with your children and their friends too. Fooled by their silly behavior, many believe that bulldogs are harmless, but they are protective and will warn you about strangers entering your house. This breed is typically lazy so you can just cuddle with them all day long. However, care must be taken to avoid getting overweight.

#8 Yorkshire terrier

Also known as Yorkie, this is a small but feisty dog breed. They are tenacious, brave, and bossy, making them a bit difficult for a household with young children. However, they are great companions and will make good family pets for a household with older children. This small dog with a big attitude will protect your home from intruders. The diva personality needs a lot of care and affection; though they will return the love tenfold! A great fact to know about Yorkies is that they live long life and are hypoallergenic.

#9 Miniature Schnauzer

They are a very active and vocal breed of dogs; known for their high levels of energy, this breed is very popular among families. They are lively, friendly, and always eager to please. This intelligent breed is a quick learner making them easy to train and it is also necessary to keep them mentally stimulating. Because of their playful nature, they will mix well with children and tend to be protective of them as well.

#10 American Staffordshire terrier

Also known as American Staffy, this short-coated dog is famous among families with children. They love playing and are good and gentle-natured breeds, making them a trustworthy friend. A responsible and socializing breed enjoys rough-and-tumble activities, but also can sit and cuddle you when it’s their time to settle.

Bottom Line
